Van Newkirk Herefords
We’d like to welcome you, your family, and friends to our 51st annual bull and female sale on Monday, January 15, 2024. The cattle business is changing rapidly. High-quality cattle are being better identified and priced accordingly. It’s a terrific time to be in the cattle business. It’s nice to be on the right side of the supply and demand equation. Prices for top-quality feeder cattle have hit historic highs and should remain that way for years to come.
Please feel free to stop in anytime and walk through the bulls. The quality runs deep enough you’ll want to walk through all 250 bulls, that’s hard to do the morning of the sale. The bulls will be available Saturday and Sunday, if you’d like to come early to spend more time leisurely walking through them.
Marbling matters, with the select and choice spread in the beef market at higher levels it just makes sense to raise higher marbled cattle. This year’s entire group of sale bulls sit at the top 20% of the Hereford breed in marbling and the bull calves ranked in the top 12% of the breed. We have worked at ratcheting marbling numbers up slowly, so as not to compromise other key traits such as fleshing ability and fertility.
Easy fleshing, feed-efficient cattle matter. With inputs continually rising, fast-growing, feed-efficient feeder cattle, and easy fleshing replacement females are key. Our type of easy keeping, long, growthy Hereford cattle will add efficiency to any cow herd. Our cowherd is managed without special treatment. We maintain our cows the same as any good commercial operation does-as inexpensively as possible. Our cows graze with no supplement nine months a year and calves receive no creep feed.
Length, consistency, and structural correctness matters. As you look through the catalog you’ll notice subtle differences in the bulls, but from top to bottom they all have certain things in common: long, strong backs, straight sound legs, big hindquarters, deep ribbed, long hip, and out of a very efficient mother cow with good trouble free udders. Their consistent quality is a sign of how even and consistent
their calves will be.
Best guarantee in the business. We expect these bulls to do well in any environment, and hold up well. if you have any problems please do not hesitate to call us. We will retain a quarter semen interest in all sale bulls.
